The 12 Houses in Astrology and What Each One Means

What each of the 12 houses (bhavas) in a Vedic birth chart means, from the 1st house of self to the 7th of marriage and the 10th of career, and what an empty house means.

Quick answer

A birth chart is divided into 12 houses (bhavas), each covering an area of life: the 1st house is the self, the 7th is marriage and partnerships, the 10th is career, and so on. Planets in a house colour that area, and every house is ruled by the lord of the sign that falls in it. Calculating the houses needs your exact time and place of birth.

Making sense of your kundli for the first time

The first time most people look at their kundli, it’s a confusing grid of boxes, numbers and abbreviations. Someone in the family points at one box and says “your Saturn is in the 7th, that’s why your marriage is delayed”, and you nod without really knowing what a “7th” is.

The houses are the simplest place to start. Each one is just an area of life. Once you know which box stands for what, the chart stops being a mystery and starts reading like a map.

What each house means

  1. 1st house (Tanu): self, body, personality and appearance.
  2. 2nd house (Dhana): wealth, family, speech and food.
  3. 3rd house (Sahaja): siblings, courage, effort and communication.
  4. 4th house (Sukha): mother, home, comfort, property and vehicles.
  5. 5th house (Putra): children, intelligence, creativity and romance.
  6. 6th house (Ripu): enemies, illness, debts, competition and service.
  7. 7th house (Kalatra): marriage, spouse and business partnerships.
  8. 8th house (Ayu): longevity, transformation, sudden events and hidden matters.
  9. 9th house (Bhagya): luck, father, dharma, higher learning and long journeys.
  10. 10th house (Karma): career, status, reputation and actions.
  11. 11th house (Labha): gains, income, ambitions and friends.
  12. 12th house (Vyaya): expenses, losses, foreign lands, sleep and liberation.

Groups of houses astrologers talk about

You’ll often hear astrologers group the houses together. These groups explain why some houses are seen as strong and others as challenging:

  • Kendra houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th): the pillars of the chart. Planets here are considered powerful.
  • Trikona houses (1st, 5th, 9th): the houses of fortune and dharma, considered the most auspicious.
  • Dusthana houses (6th, 8th, 12th): the houses of difficulty, such as illness, sudden change and loss.
  • Upachaya houses (3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th): houses that improve with time and effort.

Notice that the 6th house is both a dusthana and an upachaya. Challenges like competition and debt can be hard at first, but people often grow stronger by facing them. That double nature is typical of how Astrology reads life.

Houses, planets and lords

Each house holds one of the 12 signs, and the planet that rules that sign is the house lord. Astrologers read a house through three things: the planets sitting in it, its lord and where that lord is placed, and the planets aspecting it. See the 12 rashis and their ruling planets.

For a career question, for example, an astrologer will usually look at the 10th house and its lord first, then at the 2nd (income), 6th (daily work and service) and 11th (gains). No single house tells the whole story.

North Indian and South Indian charts

If your kundli looks different from a friend’s, it may simply be drawn in a different style. In the North Indian chart, a diamond-shaped layout, the houses stay in fixed positions and the signs move around them; the top centre diamond is always the 1st house. In the South Indian chart, a square grid, the signs stay fixed and the 1st house is marked wherever your ascendant falls. Both show exactly the same information.

What does an empty house mean?

An empty house is not a bad sign. It simply has no planet in it, and it is read through its lord instead. Most charts have several empty houses, since there are nine planets and twelve houses.

Houses need your exact birth time. If you don’t know it, numerology works from your date of birth alone; see numerology vs Astrology.
