Quick answer
Vastu divides a home by direction. Each of the eight directions has a ruling deity, and five of them carry the five elements: water in the north-east, fire in the south-east, earth in the south-west, air in the north-west and space at the centre. Many consultants refine the eight directions into 16 zones of 22.5° each, and the Vastu Purusha Mandala maps 45 deities onto a grid of 81 or 64 squares.

The “why” behind the Vastu rules
Most people meet Vastu as a list of rules: kitchen here, bedroom there, never a toilet in that corner. Learned that way, it’s hard to remember and harder to apply to a real home that doesn’t fit the list.
Once you understand the directions and elements behind the rules, things click. You stop memorising and start reasoning: “this is the fire zone, so the stove belongs here” or “this is the earth zone, so heavy furniture is fine”. That’s what this article is for.
The eight directions and their deities
- East: Indra, and the Sun. Health, growth and new beginnings.
- South-east (Agneya): Agni. Fire, energy, cooking.
- South: Yama. Strength and rest.
- South-west (Nairutya): Nirriti. Earth, stability, the head of the family.
- West: Varuna. Gains and fulfilment.
- North-west (Vayavya): Vayu. Air, movement, relationships and guests.
- North: Kubera. Wealth and opportunities.
- North-east (Ishanya): Ishana (Shiva). Water, clarity and prayer.
The five elements (panch tatva)
- Water (jal): north-east.
- Fire (agni): south-east.
- Earth (prithvi): south-west.
- Air (vayu): north-west.
- Space (akash): the centre, or Brahmasthan.
A room works well in Vastu when its use matches its element: the stove in the fire zone, water storage and prayer in the water zone, and heavy, stable things in the earth zone.
Why the north-east is kept light and the south-west heavy
This is one of the most repeated Vastu ideas, and it follows straight from the elements. The north-east is the water zone, linked with clarity and the morning sun, so it’s kept open, clean and light: a puja corner, a window, perhaps a small water feature. The south-west is the earth zone, linked with stability, so it’s the right place for heavy wardrobes, a solid bed and storage.
Get these two the wrong way round, with heavy cupboards piled in the north-east and an empty, open south-west, and many consultants say the home feels unsettled. Swapping the furniture is often the single most effective change in an older home.
The 16 Vastu zones
Many modern consultants divide the 360° around the centre of a home into 16 zones of 22.5° each: N, NNE, NE, ENE, E, ESE, SE, SSE, S, SSW, SW, WSW, W, WNW, NW and NNW. Each zone is linked with a part of life, which allows finer advice than the eight directions alone. Schools differ in the exact meaning and colour they give each zone.
How to find the zones in your own home
- Take a floor plan of your home, even a rough hand-drawn one, roughly to scale.
- Find the centre: for a rectangular home, draw the two diagonals and see where they cross.
- Take a compass reading and mark north on the plan.
- From the centre, draw lines for the eight directions, or for 16 zones of 22.5° each if you want more detail.
- Note which rooms and furniture fall in each zone.
For an irregular home, such as an L-shaped flat, finding the centre is trickier, and that is one of the cases where an experienced consultant earns their fee.
Vastu Purusha Mandala and the 45 devtas
The Vastu Purusha Mandala is the sacred grid behind Vastu. It is drawn as 81 squares (9 × 9, the “81 pad” mandala) or 64 squares (8 × 8), with the Vastu Purusha lying across it, head towards the north-east, and 45 deities (devtas) presiding over different squares. Brahma sits at the centre, which is why the Brahmasthan is kept open.
You don’t need to learn all 45 devtas to live in a Vastu-friendly home. The mandala mainly explains why the centre is sacred, why the north-east is treated with such care, and why the position of a main door along a wall makes such a difference.
Frequently asked questions
Which direction is best in Vastu?
No direction is best for everything. Each direction suits a particular use: north-east for prayer, south-east for the kitchen, south-west for the master bedroom.
What are the 16 zones in Vastu?
A division of the home into 16 directions of 22.5° each, from north through north-north-east to north-north-west, used for more precise Vastu advice.
How many devtas are in the Vastu Purusha Mandala?
45 deities preside over the squares of the mandala, with Brahma at the centre.
How do I find the centre of my house for Vastu?
For a rectangular plan, draw the two diagonals; where they cross is the centre, or Brahmasthan. Irregular shapes need a more careful calculation.
Why is heavy furniture placed in the south-west?
The south-west is the earth zone, linked with stability. Heavy, solid things belong there, while the north-east, the water zone, is kept light and open.
